Right to Information (RTI) application filed by SFLC.in
We have filed right to information (RTI) applications in various states, asking for access to the copy of the orders that called for internet shutdowns. We have filed RTI applications for all shutdowns across the country whose orders weren’t available.
Offline and online RTI’s have been filed by the research assistants in their states – Rajasthan, West Bengal and Maharashtra)
The filing receipts for these applications will be available upon request. Further details of our work can also be found
here
The RTI Application included the following question: “What is the exact number of Internet Shutdowns that were ordered in Rajasthan during 07.08.2017 to 01.05.2018?”. We received information from district level departments of Rajasthan in response to the RTI application. Replies to similar RTI queries in MP and UP were dismissed and returned. On the basis of RTI responses, we found that there were at least 26 unreported instances of Internet shutdowns in Rajasthan alone during the eight-odd months in question. A detailed blogpost about the responses from Rajasthan to our RTI applications can be viewed
